The Power of Expansive Thinking

The Power of Expansive Thinking

In a previous article, I reflected on how easy it is to sacrifice quiet time and rest in pursuit of constant productivity. When I gave up my Sundays, I didn't realize at first what was truly being lost. It wasn't just physical rest; it was the opportunity for expansive thinking.

Technical Thinking vs. Expansive Thinking

Most high performers excel at technical thinking. Technical thinking is analytical, linear, and problem-focused. It asks questions like: How do I complete this task? How do I fix this immediate bug? How do I optimize this routine? While technical thinking is essential for execution, relying on it exclusively narrows your vision.

Expansive thinking, on the other hand, steps back from immediate execution to ask broader, higher-level questions: What am I building towards? Why does this matter? How does my work align with a higher purpose and long-term vision?

Accounting for Your 1,440 Minutes

Every day gives us exactly 1,440 minutes. If you take an accounting of your thoughts, how many minutes are spent in constructive, expansive reflection versus fear, anxiety, or reactive problem-solving?

When our minds are trapped entirely in technical or fear-driven thinking, we lose sight of the bigger picture. Expansive thinking creates the mental space required for genuine breakthrough ideas and spiritual connection.

Bridging Psychiatry and Religion for Expansive Growth

Psychiatry provides tools to understand cognitive biases, overcome subconscious fear loops, and manage mental energy. Religion provides the expansive framework that connects us to a Higher Power and a purpose beyond immediate material gains.

By pairing psychiatric insights with a strong spiritual foundation, you can quiet negative subconscious noise and unleash the full power of expansive thinking in your life and career.
