This is a common question for a lot of people, not just my patients. It's a question I don't take lightly. I believe medications can help but I also believe they have very real limits.

No one likes taking medications. It's a chore and if you have to do it every day, it becomes a nuisance. It feels like a handicap. It feels like you're not a whole person. But this is just a distraction.

The real question that needs to be answered is, "Are you suffering?"

Suffering takes on many forms. For people with Depression, they can't live life to the fullest. For people with Bipolar Disorder, they find themselves improving in life, and then crashing hard, losing all of their progress. For people with Schizophrenia, they have distortions in reality that affect their decisions.

Mental health suffering goes deeper than just a biological chemical imbalance. It affects your quality of life, your personal growth, and your understanding of reality. If a medication can help eliminate or at least lessen that suffering, it's worth trying out.

But medications are not the "solution" to all of life's problems. I think that's where people go wrong on the other side. If you're familiar with my content, I try to understand people in 5 parts: Biological, Psychological, Emotional, Existential, Spiritual. Medications help with the Biological. There are other resources for the rest.
